BAIF Development Research Foundation is a large Indian NGO helping smallholder farmers, in particular through artificial insemination of their crossbred cows at their doorstep. With international support, BAIF has created for the past 5 years a large female reference population of Bos taurus × Bos indicus cows in order to enhance the genetic merit of this crossbred population through genomic selection. We review the overall context of the project and its objective, the characteristics of the reference population and the choice of the recorded traits. Efficient ways to use the results of genomic evaluations are proposed, underlying the necessary changes required, in particular in the management of the bull stud. Finally, opportunities of upscaling this initiative to other partners in India are discussed.
